1959. Dad and the Austin that I used to get travel sick in. These are the garages, at the back of North street, that Dad built with a little help from the two sons. On the right is the original bill of conveyance for the purchase of 21 North Street. Now you know what inflation is!
This van was bought brand new. It originally was gray all over. In later years, Dad painted the lower part of the van black to combat corrosion. Between the back of the garages and the adjacent wall was a gap of no more than 18 inches which was where we always used to have to climb to retrieve a tennis ball or two. It wasn't much fun because it had a very flimsy asbestos roof. The building with the single sloping asbestos roof was originally one story higher with a tiled roof. Dad took off one story because the roof was rotten. Garages are built on the site of an old pub called "The ______ & Compass". Can't remember the whole name
ReplyDeleteThere is a story with this invoice. The 1000 pounds was, in fact, a balance from a trade between us and Mr. & Mrs. Whiting, who originally lived in 21 North Street. In other words, we swapped houses and paid 1000 pounds difference.
